Earlier this week, we celebrated my birthday at my in-laws' house. Ian gave me this 40 lb gnome statue to paint! Also, I have already eaten all of those Snickers.

After supper, we all sat around in the livingroom talking.

On my actual birthday, Jared went into work late because of all the snow and ice. When he left, he gave me strict instructions not to do any actual work, so I started a project for our bedroom instead.

We just finished up a really awesome project today, but this is our disastrous kitchen before it was finished...

I hope y'all have a safe and fun weekend! Stay warm!

Georgia Snowpocalypse 2014

I'm sure y'all have heard about how Atlanta has completely shut down because of the "sudden" snow and ice storm. Traffic was so awful, a woman gave birth on 285! Two days later, and people are STILL trying to get home! Daddy left at 2 on Tuesday to pick up my sister and TEN hours later, they got home. Mama took 6 hours to get home on what's normally a 20 minute ride. Jared left work and had to ditch the car 6 miles from home and walk in the snow and ice. Luckily, one nice woman gave him a lift for one of the miles, so he didn't have to walk all six. My brother-in-law walked 9 miles home from work. In spite of all the horrific traffic and awful accidents, I'm really proud of how our community banded together and showed true Southern hospitality. This Buzzfeed article shows some of that!

Once my family was all where they were supposed to be, I managed to calm down a little bit, and Jared and I enjoyed the pretty snow.

This instagram photo shows how pretty our house is in the winter!

This is our backyard before the snow covered everything.

Their faces kill me!

Ophelia is so regal in the snow!

Ian gave me this gnome for my birthday. He's got a bowl full of snow!

It's times like these that show people's true colors, and I'm proud of how our communities opened their doors to help each other.

*Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to wish me happy birthday today on various social media sites. I see and appreciate every single one!*

Inspiration Files: Open Shelving + a Tiny Bit of Progress

One of our goals this year is to get more storage in the kitchen, and I've become obsessed with the idea of open shelving. So, of course, I went to Pinterest and found some beautiful examples!

Jared and I found some cast iron brackets similar to these to use. I just love those blues!

I really love how this has so much counter space underneath the shelves, and that's something that we are going to try and go for with this project as well. In my mind, there will be a table under the shelving, and I was going to make a skirt for it like what is hanging under these counters. I want to be able to hide small appliances, Christmas dishes, and other things that aren't necessary for our day to day living.

I love everything about this picture. The painted cabinets, the red teapot, the sprig of rosemary in the jar...everything.

We have made a smidgen of progress on our version of the project. Jared went to Lowe's and got six 1x10x48 shelf pieces cut, and I primed both sides of them.

Now we've just got to paint both sides, hang the shelves, find a table, paint the table, make some table curtains, and get everything all organized! No big deal, right?

I missed last week's Photo Friday, so this is two week's worth!

Jared and I are starting slow progress on a new shelving/storage project for the kitchen!

Buckshot got neutered last week. He was pretty pitiful for a while.

I delivered this basket of bouquets last week.

I found this amazing cow's head, and for some reason, I love it more than I can explain.

I took my ring to Helzberg to get cleaned, and they said it needed some repairs since I'm apparently very rough on my rings. When I got it back, it was so shiny and perfect!

I'm not the only one who likes watching Jared cook!

That same night, Jared cooked some steak for us! He spoiled me for sure.

I love how this turned out!

I made porkchops on the double-sided griddle that is hanging up!

These two start looking out the window for Jared really early in the day.

These knuckleheads kill me.

I  hope y'all have a fantastic weekend! I'll see y'all on Monday!

Skillet Cookie Review!

Jared and I had supper with our friends Jared and Jess last night, and I was responsible for dessert, so I scoured pinterest to find the perfect dessert recipe. I found this one from Cooking Classy and it turned out great! The original recipe called for molasses, but I followed her suggestions for a substitute, and it came out great!

Here are the ingredients with the substitutions already in place (because who keeps vanilla bean paste and molasses in their cabinets?)

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup plus 2 Tbsp granulated sugar.
2 1/2 Tbsp original or french vanilla coffee creamer powder
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. While it's heating up, whisk together in a mixing bowl flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. In another bowl, whip together the butter, granulated sugar, brownsugar, and coffe creamer until it is pale and fluffy, which is around 4 minutes. Then mix in your egg and your vanilla extract. Add the dry ingredients until they are combined, but don't over mix. Add the chocolate chips into mixture, and then press into greased skillet. Bake for 30 minutes!

I meant to take a picture of how it turned out once we got to Jess and Jared's house, but I got too excited and we started eating it first.

It turned out thicker than I expected it to, so it was more like an actual cake than a cookie cake, but either way it was delicious!

More Cast Iron Kitchen Storage!

I got several new pieces of cast iron for Christmas (plus one giant skillet I found at the thrift store), and I had officially run out of space to hang them, so we decided to make another rack to hang some of them on. The best part about this project? It didn't cost us anything!

This large set of 2x4s was used to help hold up the back deck while it was under construction. Then they came to rest out in front of our house for a couple of years.

So, Jared cut them down to around 7 feet tall and separated them.

Handsome man!

Then, he ground off the excess metal with a grinder and then went over them with a belt sander.

I stained each board with the same stain we used on the other skillet rack, but since one of the boards had spent so much time facing the sun, it was significantly lighter than the other. I ended up mixing some of the stain we used on the back deck to get the lighter board to look darker.

Then, I found the studs and Jared hung the boards. Once the boards were up, we arranged everything how we wanted it. Easy Peasy!

I don't think we will hang anything we use on a regular basis very low on the boards because of the dogs running back and forth everywhere, but we could hang decorative pieces there instead.

This has been a full week for us at the Tuttle house. Jared has been sick AND started a new job, so he's been kind of tired. Puck and Buckshot are sympathetic.

I finished up this bouquet order this week!

This little baby impeded my bed-making progress.

Between ripping out the carpet this week and working on those bouquets, my fingers were in trouble.

Our can opener broke, so I asked Jared if he would stop on the way home to get one...

side note: we still don't have an actual can opener. besides Jared, of course.
Jared cooked some fried chicken for me! and it was delicious! The man can cook, for sure.

Last night, Jared fell asleep on the couch, so I woke him up so he could go to bed and I told him I was going to jump in the shower. Well, when I got out of the shower, he wasn't in bed, but someone else was...

I hope y'all have a safe and hopefully warmer weekend! Now, I'm off to clear out the basement...ugh.
