DIY Under-Cabinet Lighting with White Christmas Lights!

Christmas decorating is in full swing over here! Today marked my third and final day of decorating! While I was working in the kitchen last night, I was lamenting that it was so dark under the cabinets. I, of course, was struck with genius when I looked down to see the string of white Christmas lights in my hand. Why not use Christmas lights?!

This turned out to be a fairly simple project. The only things we ended up using besides Christmas lights was cup hooks (like the ones you hang mugs and things on) and a drill to pre-drill the holes for the cup hooks.

First, I had to decide if I liked how it looked, so I literally duct taped the Christmas lights under the cabinet where my microwave sits to see how it looked. I liked it. And I really liked that I had a short strand of Christmas lights that fit perfect under the cabinet where the microwave sits. I didn't like the idea of running the Christmas lights in front of the sink since I make a huge mess every time I do the dishes, so the short set of lights worked out perfect!

I measured around the edges of the cabinets next to the sink and by the stove and determined we'd need 16 feet of lights, and Jared went around the kitchen pre-drilling holes for my cup hooks.

HANDSOME MAN WORKING, HERE!

Anyway, we put one cup hook in every corner and then one in the middle of every cabinet at the front and at the back. Getting them in the pre-drilled holes was the most annoying part of this whole project because we were at such a weird angle during that part. We ended up using about 20 cup hooks. I thought cup hooks could be a good idea because it would be easy to take down the lights and replace them if we needed to.

Once all the cup hooks were in, we started stringing the lights up!

There were a couple of places where Jared thought the lights were hanging too low, and he used a push-pin to wedge the lights slightly higher and more to his liking. To be honest, I didn't notice a difference, but if he's happy, I'm happy!

For now, we are just plugging up the lights in the morning and unplugging the lights at night when we go to bed, but Jared is planning on putting them on a timer.

I know it's such a small thing, but it makes our kitchen look so much brighter and happier! What I like even better is that since I already bought the cup hooks (I have used nearly an entire box of 50 since I bought them because I think they are so handy) and we had the Christmas lights in our decoration box, it cost us nothing!

What kind of spur of the moment projects are y'all working on?
